Congratulations to Dr. Aly Karsan! Dr. Karsan is one of 34 projects led by UBC researchers awarded a collective $7 million in funding provided through the CFI’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF). He is also one of two research teams led by UBC faculty of medicine professors that have been awarded more than $9 million in combined funding through the 2024 Terry Fox New Frontiers Program Project Grants (PPG) to expand cancer research and improve treatments.
Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF)
The CFI JELF awards were announced as part of a $502 million federal investment to support science, researchers and students. The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of National Revenue, made the announcement at the Université de Sherbrooke, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry and the Honourable Mark Holland, Minister of Health.

Terry Fox New Frontiers Program Project Grant
One B.C.-based project, led by Dr. Aly Karsan, a professor in UBC’s department of pathology and laboratory medicine, is receiving $7.5 million in renewal funding to take their work on leukemia to the next level, exploring epigenomic changes that influence the cancer’s behaviour and treatment response.
The two B.C. research teams were among four projects that received a total of $19.8 million in new and renewal funding.
