I was born in Bangladesh where infectious diseases kill thousands of people every year, but little is done to solve the problem. With a goal to answer this issue through research, I earned an MSc in Microbiology at the University of Dhaka. This led to six years at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Bangladesh focusing on a major public health issue. The combined work resulted in development and validation of a rapid detection and intervention tool for the prevention of transmission of cholera in household drinking water, which has saved thousands of lives.
After starting a family, I then completed a PhD in molecular virology at the University of Manitoba, understanding the cellular proteome changes caused by noteworthy viruses including Influenza, Zika, and Coronavirus. Beginning January 2023, I started postdoctoral training at the University of British Columbia, Centre for Blood Research, with Dr. Ed Pryzdial, investigating the role of host-derived clotting factors in viral pathogenesis and infection, targeting these for the development of broad-spectrum antiviral agents.
