In honour of National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW), we spoke with different Postdoctoral Fellows at the CBR to highlight their research, share their stories and celebrate their journeys.
Dr. Sahand Ghaffari – Kizhakkedathu Lab
Tell me about your research
As a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Blood Research and Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC, my work focuses on designing and developing novel biomaterials as blood filtration devices for universal blood conversion. In collaboration with our industry partner Avivo Biomedical, I’ve been leading efforts to design and test polymer-based systems that can safely and efficiently convert any blood type into universal type O and make it ready for transfusion on-the-spot. Beyond transfusion compatibility and organ transplant matching, this research has applications in emergency medicine and hemorrhage control in scenarios such as civilian car accidents or combat injuries on the battlefield. At its core, this project also seeks to break down barriers that currently limit equitable access to life-saving blood transfusions and organ transplants across different demographic groups and populations, and I am proud to be able to harness the power of science and engineering to improve healthcare access for all Canadians, and eventually the global population.
What led you to the lab?
During my PhD, I worked extensively on the design and development of a variety of biomaterial medical implants with antimicrobial and wound healing properties with applications in different areas of medicine including dentistry, dermatology, and urology. I was drawn to The Kizhakkedathu Lab because it offered a unique opportunity to apply my engineering skills in biomaterial design and functionalization to a problem with immediate clinical relevance: blood transfusion safety and availability. The collaborative environment—working alongside scientists, engineers, clinicians, and industry partners—was also a key factor in my decision.
What do you like to do outside of the lab?
Outside the lab, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends and, colleagues. The UBC community is truly amazing and I enjoy contributing to it in every possible way, from volunteering at various events on campus or at CBR, to leading fundraising activities and organizing multicultural festivals at my kid’s school. I also love biking and hiking around Vancouver and spending time outdoors, which helps me recharge and bring fresh perspectives to my work.
What advice would you give someone still searching for a program/postdoc position?
My biggest advice is to look beyond the research project alone and pay close attention to the mentorship style, lab culture, and collaborative opportunities. A strong postdoc experience comes not only from developing technical skills but also from being in an environment that supports your professional growth. I’d also encourage candidates to seek projects that excite them both scientifically and personally—because passion makes the challenges much more rewarding.
